Medicare Basics

Medicare is for YOU if you are age 65 and over or receiving Social Security Benefits due to disability.

Medicare is made up of several parts

  • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

  • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans)

  • Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Plans).

  • Medigap (Medicare Supplement)

Medicare Costs

Generally speaking, Medicare Part A and B only cover 80% of covered medical expenses. When you use healthcare services you will have deductible and coinsurance costs to pay. There is no out of pocket limit on your responsibility for Medicare Part A and B costs.

Part C, Medigap and some employer health plans are what people use to cover the 20% that Part A and B do not cover.

Even if you plan on continuing to work, it's important to compare your employer plan side by side with your Medigap and Part C options to make sure you are not overpaying for healthcare.

These are the very-stripped-down basics, but you need a licensed health insurance agent to guide you through the many complexities of Medicare and its different parts.
